PMAPS 2026 will host a special memorial tribute during the Gala Dinner to honor the life and extraordinary contributions of Professor Roy Billinton, a pioneer in power system reliability engineering and one of the most influential figures in the field of probabilistic methods applied to power systems.
Professor Billinton was a Distinguished Emeritus Professor at the University of Saskatchewan, where he dedicated more than five decades to education, research, and mentorship. Widely recognized as the founding father of modern power system reliability engineering, his work transformed reliability assessment into a rigorous discipline based on probability theory, statistical analysis, and engineering principles.
Throughout his remarkable career, Professor Billinton authored and co-authored more than 980 technical papers and 10 books, including foundational texts that shaped reliability evaluation practices worldwide. He mentored generations of researchers and engineers, supervising more than 135 graduate students and inspiring many leaders across academia and industry.
Professor Billinton was a co-founder of the Probabilistic Methods Applied to Power Systems (PMAPS) International Society and served as its president since its establishment. His vision and leadership played a fundamental role in building the global PMAPS community and advancing the application of probabilistic methods in power systems.
His exceptional contributions were recognized through numerous honors, including IEEE Fellow, Foreign Associate of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and the IEEE Power & Energy Society Lifetime Achievement Award. His legacy continues through the methods, standards, researchers, and power systems professionals he influenced around the world.
